As I mentioned in the previous post, this holiday season I decided to purchase the ebook Truth in the Tinsel: An Advent Experience for Little Hands in an attempt to have a more meaningful month leading up to Christmas. We are only 4 days in and I am so thrilled with the activities and mini lessons that are included. My kids are older than the intended age but all the better because I really needed something that is simple yet meaningful and won't add to the stress of this month's hustle and bustle.
On Friday of last week my friend came over so we could "shop" in my basement and prep the ziplock bags that would contain the supplies for each of the days. I am so glad we did this because it makes each attempt at doing these crafts effortless, which I like!
On Saturday I told the kids what what we were going to be doing.
They asked "What's advent?"
I thought Oh no, I have a lot of catching up to do.
While we are very purposeful in teaching our children the real reason for the season the word advent is just not in our vocabulary. Just another reason why I am so glad our family is doing this together this year.
The first day we talked about Jesus being the light of the world... My daughters are old enough to read so they each took turns reading the corresponding scriptures verses from the NIrV, which I didn't know before, is written on a 3rd grade reading level. Just perfect for my crew.
The kids look forward to the craft each day. Although we are a creative family, on the average day, I find myself saying no many times to pulling out our supplies for a project that may require too much clean up. The set up and clean up are easy with these activities and they are engaging enough to satisfy their need for an artistic outlet.
