In Colossians, Paul shares with new Christians what holy living looks like. He instructs them in their daily living both in community and in their homes relationally, with one another. Not only does he address adults but he addresses children as well. The way young people behave creates habits that affect them as adults. While God can redeem anyones choices and behavior, I'd like my children to understand honor and respect when they are young so they won't have trouble with it when they are older - in school, on the job, or in their relationships. I pray that my children will have a heart to obey us and please the Lord in all that they do.
Sometimes it's hard to do what is right, especially for little kids. When everything within my kids says not to listen to mommy and daddy, grandparents, or teachers I want them to know that God will help them obey.
As parents, we've been there, done that, and got the T-shirt.
As I look back over my childhood, there is advice that my father gave me and things my mother taught me that I carry with me today. I hope my children will grateful for the lessons they are learning, if not now, then in the future.
The home is an essential training ground for our children. I hope that as we teach them what we have learned over the years and the lessons we are still learning, they'll listen. And not think their ways are better than ours.
Being humble and having the ability to receive instructions opens our children (and us) up to blessing.
Verses on Obedience:
