I certainly could stand a little more gratitude from the little ones in my home.
I am tired of making meals that are met with complaints or cleaning the house only for it to be littered with stuff soon thereafter. Yet, I realize, if I want the climate in my home to change, I have to be intentional about teaching my children about being grateful. Not only that, but I will have to be modeled it too. The kids aren't the only ones learning about thankfulness this month...
What I want more than to get my kids to stop complaining is for them to have heart of thankfulness.
We all know it is easy to give thanks when things are going well but how about when it's not?Last year I read One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp and was inspired to live a life with more gratitude. Inspired by this month memory topic I have begun the Joy Dare with my children. It’s like a God scavenger hunt -- 3 gifts to hunt for every day. In the morning we take a look at what is listed for the day and keep our eye open for those gifts. We talk about them over dinner and in the evening before bed we offer up a prayer of thankfulness for each one.
Creating new habits doesn't always come easy but are well worth the effort they take to form.
We don't just give thanks with our words either. My kids are budding musicians. My oldest plays the clarinet, my middle girl plays piano, and my youngest can't wait to start drum lessons. On days they are reluctant to practice I remind them that God has placed their love of music on the inside of them. The notes they play are pleasant to His ears and a wonderful way to express thankfulness and worship too.
Verses on Thankfulness:
- Give thanks no matter what happens. God wants you to thank him because you believe in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIrV)
- Do everything without finding fault or arguing. Then you will be pure and without blame. You will be children of God without fault in a sinful and evil world. Among the people of the world you shine like stars in the heavens.Philippians 2:14-15 (NIrV)
- Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good. His faithful love continues forever. Psalm 136:1 (NIrV)
- Let us come to him and give him thanks. Let us praise him with music and song. Psalm 95:2 (NIrV)
