Sings Over Me

sing over me When my daughter Ava was itty-bitty, Target ran a commercial advertising its wedding registry. A catchy tune played as images of wedded bliss, which included stylish kitchen and bath items, danced across the screen. The melody got stuck in my head and I couldn’t help but sing it to Ava while I changed her diaper and got her ready for bed.

I love to be with you I love you love you love you love you love you I do I love to be with you You know I love you I do

When my son was just as small, he went through a fussy phase. Some evenings, I would have to rock him to get him to settle down. I am not talking about the gentle rock you’ve seen mother’s do as they gaze into their children’s eyes. I vigorously moved back and forth in the chair, holding his squirming arms and his body firm. I would sing.

Two little blackbirds sitting on a hill One’s named Jack And the other’s named Jill. Fly away, Jack. Fly away, Jill.
 Come back, Jack.
 Come back, Jill

My middle girl was known to purr as I sang You are my Sunshine.

Now that the kids are older, they still ask me to sing these songs. On long days, I reluctantly give in and answer their requests. The weary drains and delight fills as smiles come across their face. We snuggle in tight and I sing over them.

As I read Zephaniah 3:17 I couldn’t help but think of these moments with my children.

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.

God, a mighty warrior, is with me. The one who watches over me, who saves me, also takes delight in me and sings over me. This scripture chips away at the false image of God I have created in my mind. I hate to admit it, but when I think of God, I consider His justice but hardly His mercy, His strength but rarely his tenderness. Who He really is becomes clear as I spend time reading His Word.

So that leaves me wondering what song He sings over me. Maybe it’s like the one I sing over my little ones.

I’m gonna make you mine Mine all Mine You and me Kimberly we’ll shine

I love to be with you I love you love you love you love you love you love you love you love you love you love you

I Do.
