Surprised by God

I love surprises, do you?

I have no idea what God has in store for my life or my family and I can’t possibly know everything that I need to ask of Him. I have wasted plenty of time trying to figure it out, to control it, and plan for it. But as I get to know the heart of God, I’ve learned that He might have something in mind, that in my limited thinking, I would never dream of.

Teaching Our Children to Pray Continually

Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians says that joy, prayer, and thanksgiving should mark the life of a Christian. And not just any kind of prayer, continual prayer or as the King James Bible states prayer “without ceasing”. Thankfully this scripture does not suggest that we are too pray without stopping, which would be impossible. But rather that we should establish a rhythm of prayer, one that includes praying on all occasions. Join me over at Faith Gateway as I share how simple it is for us to teach our kids to create a rhythm of prayer that will serve them well throughout their lives.

Exploring the World – and the Bible – with Your Kids

Sometimes when we read the Bible with our kids, it is like going to a foreign land. Just like on our vacation, understanding the context — the history, culture, and even cuisine, of the Bible —  gives us a better understanding of God’s Word and just how revolutionary it is.

We finally did it! After months of wishing, hoping, talking, and saving, we booked our family’s first trip abroad. As soon as we did I headed to our local library to get a few guidebooks, travel videos, and storybooks set in those locations. Since it was my kids first time traveling overseas I knew it would be important for them to understand our destinations’ history, culture, and cuisine so that they could get the most out it.

The One Thing Technology Won't Do for You

I love technology and all of the benefits that come along with it. Unfortunately, there are a few drawbacks to this. With the ability to access information so easily, I have committed less to memory.

If I am not careful, the same thing can happen to me when it comes to the Word of God. There are so many wonderful Bible apps and devotionals available online that sometimes I forget to keep it in the one place it’s meant to be: my heart.

You'll find the solution to that and a great resource for kids over at Faith Gateway. Join me there?

Living Life to the Fullest

Coats, scarfs, and gloves keep us warm this time of year but they can be a major pain when we have to carry them around the mall as we shop. When my husband is with us he sometimes carries them for us. When he does, I feel light and unencumbered. The freedom I experienced walking around while shopping with my husband pales in comparison to the freedom God wants us to walk around with in this life. Jesus came to bring us life and life to the fullest!

Right now in the Northeast, the weather is cold. My little ones and I bundle up in puffy coats, hats, scarves, and gloves to go outside. All this clothing keeps us warm in the frosty air however it becomes a burden when we’re at the mall.

Shopping can quickly become nearly unbearable when my little ones whine, “Mommy, carry my coat PLEASE.” I usually say “No, sweetie, carry your own coat. We won’t be here long.”

My husband is much more gracious than I am. He is more than happy to mind our belongings. When he does I feel light and unencumbered. I am in a better mood, I can think clearly, and I get things done faster. If only for a little while, I am not weighed down with all that stuff.

The freedom I experienced walking around while shopping with my husband pales in comparison to the freedom God wants us to walk around with in this life. Jesus came to bring us life and life to the fullest!

God Loves To Be With You

The month of February, and especially Valentine’s Day, is the perfect time to share with our kids what the Bible says about love. The ultimate expression of God’s love came in the form of His Son Jesus who, through His death and resurrection, redeemed us. When we truly understand the depths of God’s love for us it's easier to love others.

Join me over at Faith Gateway as a share a story about loving on my oldest girl when she was just a baby and what I learned about God, a mighty warrior who is with me. The one who watches over me, who saves me, also takes delight in me and sings over me.

Three Simple Steps to Defuse and Resolve Sibling Conflict

It is not always easy to be kind, especially when kindness is not shown to us.

My kids have different personalities and various ways they deal with conflict. One child shoves when they don’t get their way. The other raises his voice and waves a finger to emphasize his point while another plays the victim and insists the whole world is against them.

Here are some simple steps that have helped our family resolve conflict in a healthy way.

Romans 12:10 reminds us this is not the way we should handle trouble with others. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

This doesn’t come easy. So how do we do encourage our kids to do what’s right when everything within us wants to let our emotions dictate their behavior?

Gold Medal Perseverance

We will all encounter obstacles. We can choose to either let them define us or trust God and overcome them. I am over at Faith Gateway talking about the book Courage to Soar by Simone Biles.

Have you ever felt like you wanted to give up? Quit the job that makes you unhappy or end that relationship that’s just too hard? I know I have. What about your teens? Do the pressures they experience at school and in sports overwhelm them?

In Hebrews 13:21 it says God will “equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.

How encouraging!

Simples Steps of Prayer for Kids Based on the Lord's Prayer

Jesus demonstrated the simple steps of prayer, through The Lord’s Prayer, as part of the Sermon on the Mount. Here is a simple acronym I gave my kids to show them just how easy those steps are.

teaching-kids-about-prayer-400x400.jpg

When I began teaching my kids about prayer I explained that Jesus modeled prayer for us. He prayed when he was baptized, in the wilderness, on a mountainside through the night, when he was alone, in the garden of Gethsemane, and when He was transfigured.

Not only that, He demonstrated the simple steps of prayer, through The Lord’s Prayer, as part of the Sermon on the Mount. I am over at Faith Gateway sharing a simple acronym I gave my kids to show them just how easy those steps are.

I am also talking aboutIn addition to that, I shared with my kids the book The Lord’s Prayer by Rick Warren which captures the essence of Jesus’ words  with vibrant illustrations of Richard Jesse Watson.  CLICK HERE TO READ MORE>>>

On Running With a Partner

My husband and I like to run before the demands of our day of day begin. That means dragging ourselves out of bed early, often when we’d much rather sleep. As the days get shorter and colder it is even harder. I wake up, get dressed, and honor the commitment we made, but only because I know I am not alone.

The Bible says that Jesus is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24).

Like a great running partner, Jesus is with me, I am not alone.

Jesus has been present since the very beginning of time. Many may think He made His first appearance in the New Testament, however, mentions, whispers, and echoes of Him can be found throughout the Old Testament. In fact, there are hundreds of clues and promises about Jesus throughout the early scriptures that are fulfilled by Him in the New Testament.

Join me over at Faith Gateway to hear about a devotional for your children that uncovers Jesus not just in the New Testament but throughout the whole Bible.

How the Bible is Fundamental to Kids’ Spiritual Formation

When kids are young, it is the perfect time to begin the practice of reading the Bible because it is fundamental to their spiritual formation. It will help them establish a personal relationship with God, equip them to make good choices., fill their minds with good, and create a foundation of faith.

proverbs-22-6-800x800-768x768-2.jpg

I introduced my kids to the stories and characters of the Bible when they were really young. At the time it was important for me to find a story Bible that was appropriate for their age. Now that my little ones aren’t so little, they are ready for their first “real” Bible.

When kids are young, it is the perfect time to begin the practice of reading the Bible because it is fundamental to their spiritual formation. It will help them establish a personal relationship with God, equip them to make good choices., fill their minds with good, and create a foundation of faith.

How Retelling Bible Stories Lay a Foundation of Faith

I’ve lost track of the number of times I have heard stories form the Bible. I am often tempted to think I couldn’t possibly learn something new. Then I remember how endless the wisdom and insight of God is. So I humble myself and lean in. With that frame of mind, I almost always get a new revelation of His Word.

As a young child, I can remember hearing the stories of my favorite Bible heroes over and over again. Whether at Sunday School or at home, I marveled at the adventures experienced by Moses, Nehemiah, Esther, and John the Baptist.

Now as an adult, I read these same stories to my children.

I’ve lost track of the number of times I have heard these stories. I am often tempted to think I couldn’t possibly learn something new. Then I remember how endless the wisdom and insight of God is. So I humble myself and lean in. With that frame of mind, I almost always get a new revelation of His Word.

I am over at Faith Gateway sharing a lesson I learned from David and Goliath. I did not learn this lesson the first, second, or even twentieth time I heard this triumphant tale. Each time I heard this story as a child it laid a foundation of faith in my life, setting the stage for future lessons.

Transitioning from Summer to School Year Bedtimes

The long days of summer bring endless activities that satisfy my children’s thirst for fun. There is always something to do or somewhere to go. But the later evenings (and more hours of sunlight)  make our bedtimes unpredictable and blurred, often pushed back in the chase of a summer high. I am over at Faith Gateway talking about a unique children's book that encourages children to use visualization techniques during the storytelling that stretch and engage their imaginations to help them drift off into a peaceful sleep.

It’s hard to believe summer is almost over.

The long days of summer bring endless activities that satisfy my children’s thirst for fun. There is always something to do or somewhere to go. But the later evenings (and more hours of sunlight)  make our bedtimes unpredictable and blurred, often pushed back in the chase of a summer high.

But soon it is time to go back to our old way of doing things, to embrace predictable evenings and stricter bedtimes. Getting ready for the new school year requires us to retrain both our bodies and minds. Instead of running ourselves empty, we are learning all over again how to settle down with a good book and ease into a good night’s sleep.

Head over to Faith Gateway to hear about a unique children's book that encourages children to use visualization techniques during the storytelling that stretch and engage their imaginations to help them drift off into a peaceful sleep.

How to Help Calm Our Kids’ Back-to-School Anxiety

The start of a new school year is an exciting time for many, but it can also stir up apprehension and anxiety even in the most confident child. Over the years, I have seen firsthand how the fear of the unknown can steal the joy of going back to school.

While the Word of God is the most powerful tool we have in combating fear and anxiety, we can do a few things to help our kids prepare for their first few days of school.

You Don’t Have to Be a Grown-up to Make a Difference

The Bible tells us that we are to serve others with the gifts we are given. Service to others is one of the primary ways we demonstrate God’s love. In January I mentioned a book series from award-winning Christian recording artist Natalie Grant. It was created with her twin daughters and their little sister. The first book in the series is London Art Chase. It was followed by A Dolphin Wish and now the recently released Miracle in Music City.

In this latest book the three sisters – Mia, Maddie, and LuLu learn that they aren’t too young to make a difference by getting involved in their mom’s annual benefit and auction. A missing guitar, new friendships, and a desire to help others take the sisters on an unexpected journey. After my daughter read this book she gained a better understanding of the needs many people have. She also grew in confidence that, despite being young, she can serve others; specifically those God puts on her heart. More on this fabulous book for tweens over at FaithGateway too!

Building Skills and Creativity in Your Child

The desire to create, build, and restore is not unique to our family. Throughout the Bible, and even today, God invites His people to co-labor with Him in restoration, both physical and spiritual. On Stewarding your Child's Funny Bone

Our family has a clown, my son. He enjoys makings others laugh at home and especially at school, and God has gifted him with a sense of humor. I am over at Faith Gateway today talking about Parenting a funny kid plus resources to help.

“Each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” — 1 Peter 4:10

As parents and caregivers, it is our job to teach our children how to steward their gifts well. Even when kids are young, we can ask them if they are you using what they’ve been given for the benefit of others, to make the world a better place? Or are they just using those talents to benefit themselves?

On Motherhood and Expectations

Have you ever tried to live up to an expectation of motherhood you weren't meant to meet? I have, it's not fun!

As a young mom, I was constantly on edge. I lacked the kindness and compassion I knew was important in building healthy relationships with my children. I was easily angered and then I’d beat myself up for losing my temper. I set high expectations for myself, yet continually failed to meet them. I woke up each morning hoping this would be the day that things would fall into place and I would get this mothering thing right.

I learned motherhood looks different for all of us and there is no one way to do it. Join me at FaithGateway to read about how I got unstuck and found freedom in the mother God created me to be.
